If you have been browsing the internet for sometime, you have probably seen on many blogs where the blogger has placed a Paypal donate button on their site. This is done to try and increase an additional income stream.
This is certainly the case for informational niches or training that is provided for free. In return they only ask that you donate something so they can keep up with their research and continue to provide more powerful content for free.
I have been reading up on stories where people have had their Paypal assets frozen and lost all their revenue in their account. Since they violated Paypal’s terms and conditions where it comes to the appropriate use of a “Donate” button.
You CANNOT use the word “Donate” unless you are a Charity
What I have come to learn is that you cannot use the donate button on your site as this is reserved for Registered Charities. There is nothing wrong with asking for money but you cannot request “donations” if you are operating for profit.
Is there a Solution?
To counter this issue and to continue to allow visitors to pay you something you can use custom words link or a custom graphic button without using the words “Donate”.
So for example you may use “Buy me a cup of coffee”, “Support this blog”, and so on, just not use the word donate!
Check Paypal’s Policies…
In addition, if you acquire more that $10,000 USD in received payment donations and you are non-registered charity organization, then you need to confirm to Paypal what your organization is about and what the monies will be used for.
Above all you should do your own research and come to your own conclusions.
Have you been using Paypal Donate button? Are you going to continue using the Donate button?
